I AM sorry for being burnt out this week. I had decided to take a nap that lasted over 12 hours. My complaints the previous week about headaches and feeling out of sorts were probably clues, but boy am I worn! My head is too full of stuff right now to deal with most of it.

Working 8-5, cooking, then promptly turning to online courses day in and day out, not to mention squeezing in drawing time, is all too much for me. Just give me a while to finish this job off, deal with ending lease and moving back home, and get my situation in order for next quarter, and then I can free up part my brain to engage in more artistic endeavors.

It's really just mental fatigue and should clear up nicely in a week, especially after my internship ends, but I need some time to recoup or nothing will go smoothly. Yes, I will be playing computer games when I could be drawing comics, but I really need some "nothing" time.

I'm pretty sure this is why God made Sabbath days a command.

Everything I had to get done this week is stressing me way out. I had 3 things to work on: yukata, art final, and comic. One of them HAD to go, which, when both the yukata and art project are needed by the weekend, it had to be the comic. Sorry! Blame the art final, honestly. I usually churn out my projects every week in max 2 hours (usually less), but I have the feeling the final can't be a slap-bang job.
To make up for it, I'm going to update 2 times, po~ssibly 3 next week. No guarantees on the third, since, well, that's a lot, but it's possible.

*sigh* This comic was plagued with problems. I WAS going to have inner dialogue for the little girl, but drawing a 13 year old girl trying to figure out the odds of an impending rape is a little too much for me to go through with. So completely changed it, and then the internet thing. -_-
And THEN, because I still had to type-set the thing (fiddling with the internet drove me bonkers so I just went to sleep in a huff), I find out that I left my jump drive with my scripts at work! AAAAAUGH. Luckily, most of the text was statistics that I still knew where to find. Yay?

Ok, so here's the deal: As soon as I can make the next update, updates will be regular again! After the 4th or 5th update, I may even increase the amount of updates!! The run down of what happened in May is as follows:

Early May - Finals and freak out about no future.
Mid May - Moving out, packing to move out of house, and Acen where I stopped by an Art Institute booth
Late May - Move into apt, finish job paperwork, Art Institute interviews, visits, and applications
Currently - Just started job, finished Art Institute apps and start in July, no internet in apt because they don't have the cable running, no one at the front desk understands anything technological even when I expressly said "the cable is out. that's why I don't have internet. it's not the modem or network's fault. I don't need to call the web admin's help desk." and I am way pissed off about it. Luckily some one didn't secure a wireless, but the signal's way weak and I think the bandwidth's tiny so I'm scared to upload or download anything in case they wise up and secure it.

So yeah, as soon as they either get the cable running or I get uber fed up on waiting and go out and get a verizon computer thing, there will be updates.

And for those of you who wanted clarification, yes. I found an art college I had heard about on the web at an anime convention, and in a month have become a media arts and animation student. Which added frenzied application process on top of an already stressful move for me. This is why I left the comic in a lurch. My apologies.

As the semester draws to a close my professors, as per usual, find it a RIOT to squeeze everything into a week or two. Soo... yes, I'm gonna suck horribly and not update much.

Website changes:
The site is still undergoing construction, but I had to make things live to be able to see how things interact. I do my site in Notepad, so... very lucky webcomics work best in box-like structures. Like tables. lotsnlotsnlots of tables.

Good News: I only have one more month where I will have the excuse to legitimately be too busy to update.
Bad News: I will officially be NEET in one month. (N.ot in E.ducation E.mployement or T.raining) KIIIND of a worrisome situation. I want to be a freeter until I decide to go back to school, but I don't think my parents would approve of such a career decision.

Better News: I'm planning on re-hauling the site again. The front-page won't take kmuch, I think. I chose that design for a reason and I'm sticking to it.
Good and Bad News: The other pages will undergo a much more massive makeover. But because of the amount of graphics I need to draw to make it look the way I want, it may take a long while.

Sorry about the whole missing updates thing. I've been playing the "juggling schedule" game of dropping and picking up classes in hopes that I will not have to take another semester.
I am letting you know now that this semester my classes are going to take priority, especially Senior Design. I'd REALLY like to stop paying tuition, so I probably won't make every update. And SR Design is pretty heavy on the outside-of-class hours.
My apologies, but once I get outta here, maybe I'll be able to pick up the pace.

I've been toying with whether to show the draugr fight or not, and just when i drew up the comic that would have ommitted the draugr at 11:45pm I decided it would be a poor idea. So you get this version now. The colored version will show up tonight, my apologies. I had wanted to get it done by noon, but got a love-call from my dentist. *cringe*
So with these story/dialogue issues, traffic-court that didn't happen (again!), and oh-shit-if-i-don't-pass-this-class-i-won't-graduate ... well, I'd like to say that's why I've been slacking on updating the comic. Buuuut I'm pretty sure playing LOTRO had something to do with it. Luckily I am now in the Lonelands and die more often than I finish quests so my interest is waning considerably. Expect multiple updates a week until second semester.
There will still be an update on Thursday, now that the annoying big decision is over. In theory it should go more smoothly now.

I really wanted to name comic 210 "the magicalist girl transformation." It works well if you imagine the Sailor Moon transformation song during panel 3. Man, what if the Sailor Scouts actually looked like aliens? They're from space, right?

Happy news! I just ~~saved 15% on car insurance~~ figured out how to cut down drawing time by over half! How will this help? School's starting soon (Imma 5th year, bite me.) but by making it easier (and more fun) to do comics, we may avoid another Fall2008-void. And I may be able to do 2xs a week updates until mid-August! (which isn't long... but hey, I'll take what I can get.)
How did I manage this feat of witchcraft? I found my blue mechanical pencil, and can now avoid the inking process all together. Yays!

Just wondering. Holly is commonly associated with protection, especially the wood, and especially against witches. Leaves are used for various medieval medicines, and holly can guide dreams, as well as repel negative influences.

What about false hollies? What kind of magical properties do those have? I was watching a fansubbed anime, and it said false hollies ward off oni and obake. Is that true? ... I guess I'm more wondering whether the name of the plant was translated right. I assume they're talking about the Goshiki Osmanthus, if it was actually false holly.
Since I don't have an instance where I can use this knowledge, I'm kinda reluctant to slog through the gardenning websites and HP magical plant sites. However, I am now aware that false holly makes a great barrier/hedge, and are tolerant of heat, humidity, and rabbits.

As you can imagine, this arc has a lot of research to be done on mystical and oriental artifacts. This is exceedingly difficult and frustrating for me, since Harry Potter is making my life difficult. If I search for "wand lore" or "divination" or "magical beasts" or "magical items", the first few items are HP rpgs, and most of the rest are HP fansites.
CURSE YOU, HARRY POTTER.
(I used to say "mischief managed" all the time, too. Until HP ruined it for me, and then it was, "Oh, you must read Harry Potter, since that level of coy alliteration is incapable of being developed by yourself.")

ANYWAY... There are few things that I enjoy researching and cataloging as much as metaphysical things. (Though linguistic evolution and word etymologies may trump that.) Divination, fortune-telling, druidic magics, word magics, I love them all. I don't trust them and would never practice them myself; magic because I already doubt it from the beginning so it would never work for me; and divination because I believe it works, but it feels like cheating and it's too easy to misconstrue. Not to mention the inevitable dependence on needing to know the future before every choice sounds like a displeasing crutch to need.

Well, I do a lot of research and the like, trying to understand all this metaphysical mumbo-jumbo as well as I can. BUT... when it goes into the comics, the point is still to entertain, not realism, and I might just flat out make crap up. So don't take things too seriously.

A lot has been happening. I forgot I was going to be in Michigan for a while (no computer), and hadn't seen some friends who are going to be graduating, but the biggest problem was figuring out which of the other "Dangerous Jobs" arcs was going to be next. I can't plan anything in detail for IofM, because I draw best what I want to draw at the time. I'm pretty capricious like that. Usually it's not a problem, because what I want to draw is pretty obvious, but if you hadn't noticed, "Dangerous Jobs" has a lot of introductions to new characters... and I want to introduce 'em all!
BUT, I have finally decided on one, and so next week we'll be back down to business. Maybe 2 updates? We'll see.

So yeah, I have tests and projects due all up through the 18th of March, including a mid-semester final. I'm gonna try to come out with updates anyway, because I got majorly ill during February and sucked. (Seriously. I haven't been sick all previous 3 years of college, and then this year - wth?)
Really though, there's a good chance of no updates until after the 15th. But after that, depending on my schedule, there's a good chance of 2 updates a week. This is how bad quantum physics screws with your life. Nm I probably should've taken it a year ago.

NO. There is NO RSS feed, because it wasn't popular back when I was learning to throw up a website, and I haven't gotten around to putting it up. I mean, I'm barely managing (and failing) to do updates, so of course there's not been time. I swear I will get it together and put one up by summer 2010, but until then, check the site the oldfashioned way.

Aw man, so almost didn't get this one done. I'm still way jet-lagged. Been waking up at 5:30 every morning starving and conking out around 2 pm, waking up for dinner, and then sleeping off and on until 5:30 again.
This is the first time it's taken so long to switch time zones. My tendency to sleep whenever, wherever usually trumps jet-lag.
I think I'm going to see how Monday-Friday updates work this coming school semester. I will not guarantee any regularity to the update sched. School is hard, especially when you've got one foot out the door and are looking for a job. And planning to go back to college for something totally unrelated to the major you've spent 4 years of your life working your ass off for.

I graduate next Dec, btw. I is having to start teh responsibility, chyea?

... In retrospect, that twitter msg from wednesday is a tad cryptic. That's what I get for trying to communicate jet-lagged and tired from traveling. What I meant was that there would be an update this Friday, next Monday, and next Friday with a possible comic in between on Wednesday.
For those of you curious, I was in Taiwan for 2 weeks. Fun 10-14 hour plane ride.
I am now going to go pass out from power-shoveling the 2-3 inches of snow off our ridiculously large driveway. (Thanks, weather. I get back from a 50-70F weather and have 3 inches of snow dumped on my head. Wonderful.)

I was looking through the calendar archives for last year, and that spectacular leap from August2008 to December2008 is rather ... painful. I sincerely apologize to everyone who sat through that. Blame labs for about 20%, ME340 (Dynamic Systems) for about 70%, and the other 10% was purely my fault.

Anyway, this coming semester is also, a little, uh, full. Updates are thus going to Mondays only starting August 10th to a)prepare a buffer, b)give me some time to pack, and c)give me some time to begin preparing for next year's con season.
I will try my best, but once midterms, labs, and finals crop up, I fear that anything goes.
I have approx a months' worth of buffer now, so ... ganbattene?

Having some eye problems, folks. The dry weather of Arizona killed my poor eyes, esp the lack of air conditioning and sand, and so I am resting them by trying not to focus too hard on things. So if things are misspelled, there's the reason. Drawing's not too bad, but it's the inking that's being difficult. I actually have the next comic fully drawn out, but that's all. So it will be up saturday.
Slowly getting back into the swing of things... I apologize. I didn't think a mission trip would wear me out so bad that I'd need a week to recoop. I bet it was the lack of amenities. We are SO spoiled with air conditioning, working showers, not sharing a bathroom with 14 or so girls, cell phone service that's not just at&t, ... trees ...

For those of you wondering, the trip was organized through my church to Hardrock Arizona, which is a compound in Navajo nation. We put on a 5-day program for the children, w/an adult and youth program. It was really quiet there for me, or "still" would be a better descriptor, since there's no inundation of stimuli from society (w/the exception of iphones). It was really nice to really get away from it all, and just sit and read for awhile. We were kept really busy, anyway. You get used to being hot and sweaty all the time within the first few days, although it sucks when you have to take a shower in the middle of the day (girls' shower stopped working only, so we had to use the "snore"house's showers at certain times) and break out in sweat as soon as you towel off. To try to keep the houses cool, the windows are left open, but then dust and sand are continuously blowing in. And it does jack for the top bunks anyway. And the bugs ... are freakin' huge! (and everywhere) I was chased down the sidewalk by a red fire ant that looked like it was out for blood. The big flies are really annoying because they're so loud, but they're really slow so even I got one. Bugs don't squish, it's so dry. They just kinda flatten and then spring back into shape.

As for our transportaion, we rented 7 vans to transport ourselves as well as the navajo who lived off the compound. they're old vans. Let's just say ... I now know how a tin can's contents feel rolling down the stairs.

Well, all that aside, the children are adorable. Yeah, they're loud, noisy, rambunctious and have way too much energy, but they aren't shy about showing affection. Or rather, they aren't as afraid to show affection. I couldn't help comparing them to kids back home, and the navajo children just feel more pure. They kinda attacked/mobbed one of our actors (playing a roman centurion) because he was being unfair, and one of them didn't want to come back because he thought we were actually going to kill Paul (we were acting out the Underground churches in Rome during the time the apostle Paul was in jail). They love hugs and piggyback rides, and the people are beautiful and welcoming. Oh, and food was good, thanks to our head cook and kitchen staff. Actually, the food was really good, and not something you'd expect to get when there's no A.C.

.... ... ... ... I'm afraid I have no energy to do anything, so I will have to miss an update. Sunday was a "wake up at 4 am, plane is late, sleep at 1 am", so you can probably guess what I did all Monday.
I am enjoying not being in 116 Fahrenheit weather without air conditioning and with working, adjacent showers, and no dust everywhere. And with vehicles that don't break down every other day.

I will be out of town next week, but there WILL be updates. I've been kinda working on the next 3 comics in assembly-line style: working on all the drafts, then all the underdrawings, etc. That means Friday the 10th's comic will be posted on Saturday. Hopefully, this will feel like a small price to pay for having updates next week (especially since I was a day late aaalll last week... >.>).

And a quick heads up: Monday, July 20th will probably be a day late to Tuesday the 21st, since I get back late Sunday (19th).

I had a page all ready, but it sucks. Imma try out a new comic size, so it will actually probably be up midday on Monday, but the front page might look wacked. I forgot what kinda coding I used ... so I may spend the rest of the day tweaking. Or not. Comic's inked, though, so it will definitely be up by Tuesday.

Front page may also be changed throughout the summer, and I think I'll keep the new size. Instead of starting at an 8.5x11 sheet, I want to switch to 8.5x16.5. Was having problems trying to fit all the story I wanted on one page, and felt that the story was coming out really choppy and not-fluent because of nixing of panels that wouldn't fit.

My bad, figuring it out Sunday. Friday's comic is half done, already. Struggling to draw up a buffer.

Sorry 'bout the delay for summer's regular updates. Moved back from Augasta, Ga to St Louis area, and then prepped and headed out for OMGcon's artist alley within a week. Recup-ing from OMGcon, which was great, but a late commission took an all-nighter... so I'm way beyond pooped.

Yah, so I've been in a real massive drawing funk, but it's finally going away. I honestly couldn't draw anything for over a week, not that I haven't tried. One of those times where everything I draw sux, and there is no creativity flowing thru at all.
I'm sure someone out there knows what I'm talking about. It's the most frustrating, depression-inducing times where you can't even think about anything to draw, let alone be satisfied with anything. The times where you jut want to chuck your pencil through a window and scream because you have no inspiration and you desperately want to get going on your art. To me, it's worse than going blind and trying to draw. Lotsa wrinkled, almost blank papers are lying scattered everywhere in my room.
But, as I said, it's finally drawing to a close. IofM should be bouncing back real soon, so sit tight.

And I still have a table for OMGcon (June 5). I dunno if I'll have anything worth selling, but come at least say hi!

I really want to start and expand on background and character arcs and these ghost stories are slowin' me down, not that anyone can tell or anything *sarcasm*. BUT, I don't wanna give up on them!!! Here's the plan:
I'm moving on and am going to close the arc by finishing the current story and playing out the important part of the arc. When I have time, I'm going to go back and draw the ghost stories, inputting them into the appropriate places in this arc. (Goodness knows there's enough open spots in the calenders. Blech) There will be front page notification of these updates.

I WILL draw all the ghost stories. I swear it. I just think everyone would prefer me to skip them and update more than struggle with them for monthly updates, since I'm having so many problems forcing myself to draw the ghost stories.

I was cleaning out my bookshelf and found the book that contains the character Rah's loosely based on. I wonder if anyone can figure out who it is and what book he's from. It's a rather strange transposition, I'll admit, and I personally think no one will pull 2&2 together.
HINT: It's a Russian short novel published in the 1960's. The character is not a main character.

First of all: 200,000 page views have been hit. This makes me more guilty than glad, since I'm sure most of the views were due to confusion about the schedule vs inactivity. 2nd... New site. I neglected some hw for this, which is why the comic'll be a little late. Just by a day, but I need to buckle down and do some matrix theory. If there's any problems (broken links and images and the like), lemme know. I'm pretty sure you can reply as anonymous on blogger, or use e-mail or whatever. Reasons I've been having issues updating on time:
Excuse:
Well, 18+ hours of class, but that's actually not a good reason. (Strangely enough. The courses are ok enough. Except... darn vector math.)
Real reasons:
I've been attempting to draw better. There's more to that, but that's for me.
Other comic stuffs. (Slowly updating pages and ... shirts are finally done! here. Formal link and more info about customization later.)
Attempting easier formats while still getting fluid continuity in a comic. AKA drawing the same amount of content with less panels.

Soo... to review:
I don't suggest purchasing shirts before I put up more info, but they're up to be looked at.
Style may/may not change slowly from now on.
Less panels, same amount of content = more consistent updates in the future.

1. Brief hiatus.
The hiatus will span August 14-19th. I will be packing/moving back to the dorms and working on the shirt designs and a backlog.

2. Schedule.
I'll no longer have the Saturday updates (or the attempts to have the Sat updates). For now, I'll leave the schedule as Monday, Wednesday, Friday. There is a possibility that the schedule will become a two-per-week update, but I wish to try a 3/week first.

3. Shirts.
There will definitely be shirts featuring: Li, Patian, Lila, and Nathan.
Possible shirts (thanks to a 3-way tie): Trace, Chris.
I am reluctant to do a Rah shirt since he wasn't in the top 3, though he tied with Trace and Chris. A link to where the shirts can be purchased will be located somewhere under the shoutbox, later.

4. Forums.
I haven't decided on the fate of the forums. I won't for a while, I bet. Since 72 out of 500-900 readers responded, I'm still kinda iffy about making a decision. I will assume the 72 represent a good demographic cross-section and decide ... later.

5. Health.
For those of you wondering about the eye-thing, it is difficult for me to see out of my right eye. There is heavy scarring in it, which makes it a bad idea to wear contacts. Yes, I do have an eyepatch (Arr, a pirate I be), but I don't use it often. We caught it early, so in theory we should be able to thin the scar so I can, y'know, read and draw without getting a headache due to half my vision being blurry and half not.
Short version? I'm without my right eye's vision, and it may not be permanent.

I probably won't last long given the competition's talent, but it will be AMUSING. ... HOW I managed to be 1 of 64 out of 610, I have NO IDEA.

Edit: For those of you who've been worried about me stressing over the 4 comic updates, it's ok. I am really, truly capable of doing it.
The truth is, the reason I haven't been able to do it recently is because my grandma's in her last stages of terminal cancer, and I've been driving 4 hours to the Chicago 'burbs to be with family nearly every weekend. So, yeah. I'm not stressing over it at all, I just run out of time. I want to do 4 comics a week to keep my mind off of things.

That being said, CG's been getting a lot of crap lately, and I'd like to take a moment and say: I understand. CG caters to multiple thousands of comics, and that's liable to put strain on their poor servers.
I for one am rather pleased with CG's services. The autoupdates and the Autokeen ... thing ... is probably the most wonderful thing I've come up across (since I tend to code in html ... in Notepad). It's really a wonderful community, and I know I wouldn't have nearly as many readers if I weren't in it.
(ahaha... I remember when my atspace account was my webcomic. 5 readers a year, woo!)

Of course, I am also curious as to what's been going on the past month and it would help if admins dropped us a line in the forums, but they're probably mucho busy and I am capable of dealing.

So, yeah. Either check the comic Tues/Thurs/Sat, or bookmark the backup site as well.

I finally sat down and put IofM in scale, in terms of exactly what I'm getting myself into.
I just developed a skeletal script of which story arcs happen, and in what order, until the end of IofM. There are at least 47 story arcs, and the intermissions will get longer. There are 3 "epic" plots that thread their way in and out of the story arcs and enough love stories to put Cupid in a coma. At least.
We are on Arc 5, and barely touched the epic plots (And I mean it's like hitting a boulder with a feather).
IofM is going to shave, at the very least, a decade off my life.

Notice a lot of "at least"s? I think I forgot an arc or 2. Like, most of the faculty and misc characters' arcs.

It's going to be a fun ride, though. You ready?

So, like the above stated, I am going to Acen and am thinking about getting a table in Artist Alley.
I'm just apprehensive about the whole thing since, as many of my friends know, I'm horrible at pricing my art. If someone wants me to draw them something and feel that they must pay for it, I tend to stare at them and say, "... 50 cents?" Unfortunately, right now I'm trying to see if I could possibly make a profit through this art thing.
And I don't know if anyone would find it worthwhile to visit me.

I suppose it's customary for me, as a web-comiker, to talk about my trip now (explain the hiatus), although I don't quite understand the tradition. People are here to read the comic, not read about the next chapter of the author's life.
Oh well.
Taiwan was ... humid. Warmer than the Midwest, USA, but still chilly. Like, light jacket chilly. Lotsa Japanese influence. The food was terrific (even mall and hospital food), but the streets are always crowded. Met the relatives, found out Grandma has cancer, and shopped a bit.

11-15 Dec is finals. Hopefully comics on 16,17,18 Dec.
18-31 Dec (or maybe January 1/2. What, like I keep track of things like this?) I will be out of town. State. Country. Continent. Hemisphere. Flying back to Taiwan to see my grandma. This should be an interesting experience since, although I understand conversational Chinese well enough, I can't read it to save my soul. Well, some words, but "me," "tree," "mountain," "big," "not," and "up" won't really help all that much.
Depending on if I can get some friends to do me a favor, there will be random filler art that may or may not pertain to IofM. If I can't, er... um ...

Wow, so I'm definitely getting more readerage than I thought I would be 35 comics into this thing.
